What is Jjimjilbang ? A Unique Korean Experience
If you visit Korea, you may notice something that seems a little unusual.
In Korea, there are traditional public bathhouses (mokyoktang) and sauna complexes (jjimjilbang).
A public bathhouse is not just a place for a quick shower — people go there to soak and thoroughly bathe.
While traditional bathhouses are gradually disappearing nowadays, getting naked and bathing alongside complete strangers can still feel quite unfamiliar and surprising to many foreigners.
Then, there is the jjimjilbang, which is slightly different from a regular bathhouse.
A jjimjilbang is definitely not just a place for taking a bath.
Koreans do not go to a jjimjilbang simply to take a shower or bath.
Koreans go there to relax, sweat, eat, talk with friends, take a nap, and sometimes spend several hours doing almost nothing.
So, what exactly is a jjimjilbang, and why do Koreans love it so much?
To be completely honest, I’m not particularly fond of public bathhouse or jjimjilbang because I really dislike intense heat.
Or maybe I'm just too lazy and simply prefer a quick shower at home.
However, I know that not only do many Koreans love them, but many international visitors are also deeply curious about — or already adore — the experience. That is why I would like to introduce it to you today.
What Is a Jjimjilbang?
A jjimjilbang is a traditional Korean - style bathhouse and relaxation center.
The word jjimjil refers to the process of warming or sweating the body, while bang means “room.”
A typical jjimjilbang has separate bathing areas for men and women.
After bathing, people usually change into comfortable clothes and enter the shared relaxation areas.
These areas may contain several heated rooms, each with a different temperature or atmosphere.
Some are very hot, while others are warm and comfortable enough to lie down and rest.
But a jjimjilbang is much more than a sauna.
It is a place where people spend time.
A Place to Relax, Not Just to Wash
One of the most interesting things for foreigners is how long Koreans can stay in a jjimjilbang.
You might see people lying on the warm floor, watching television, reading a book, chatting with friends, or even taking a nap.
Some jjimjilbangs have restaurants, cafés, snack areas, massage facilities, game rooms, or sleeping areas.
In other words, it is almost like a small indoor vacation.
You don't have to rush.
You can simply sweat, rest, drink some water, and repeat the process.
The Famous Korean Sauna Experience
If you visit a jjimjilbang, you will probably see several different heated rooms.
The traditional rooms may use materials such as charcoal, clay, salt, herb or stones.
Each room has its own temperature and atmosphere.
People move from one room to another, taking breaks in between.
For first-time visitors, however, there is no need to try the hottest room.
The best approach is simple : Start slowly and listen to your body.
The goal is relaxation, not endurance.
Don't Forget the Eggs and Sikhye!
There are two things that many Koreans associate with the jjimjilbang experience : boiled eggs and cold sikhye.
Sikhye is a traditional Korean sweet rice drink.
After sweating in a hot room, a cold glass of sikhye can be especially refreshing.
And the boiled eggs sold at jjimjilbangs have become almost iconic.
There is even a familiar image in Korean popular culture of someone sitting in a jjimjilbang, cracking a boiled egg and drinking sikhye.
It may sound simple, but these small traditions are part of the fun.
Why Do Koreans Enjoy Jjimjilbangs?
There is a deeper reason behind the popularity of jjimjilbangs.
Modern Korean life can be busy and stressful.
People work long hours, commute through crowded cities, and spend much of their day looking at screens.
A jjimjilbang provides a place where people can slow down.
You don't need to dress up.
You don't need to make a reservation at an expensive restaurant.
You don't even need to have a special reason for going.
You simply go, relax, and spend time with yourself or with other people.
For families, friends, and couples, it can also be an inexpensive way to spend a few hours together.
A Few Things Foreign Visitors Should Know
If you have never been to a Korean jjimjilbang, don't worry.
The experience may seem unfamiliar at first, but the basic rules are quite simple.
In the bathing area, men and women use separate facilities, and everyone showers before entering the communal baths.
The shared relaxation areas are different. Men and women can usually spend time together there, wearing the clothes provided by the jjimjilbang.
It is also a good idea to bring a small towel, drink enough water, and avoid staying too long in extremely hot rooms.
If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, leave the hot room immediately and rest.
More Than a Sauna
Perhaps the most interesting thing about a jjimjilbang is that it tells us something about Korean culture.
It is not simply about bathing.
It is about taking a break from everyday life.
It is about being comfortable around other people without having to talk to them.
It is about inexpensive food, warm rooms, simple conversations, and a little time away from the outside world.
If you are visiting Korea, a jjimjilbang may not be the first place that appears on your travel itinerary.
But if you want to experience something genuinely Korean — not just see famous tourist attractions — it is worth trying at least once.
You may leave thinking : Why don't we have places like this everywhere? And that may be the best compliment a jjimjilbang can receive.
